I spent the last hour or so talking to T.J. about what happened.
The gym class is a Junior/Senior mix class. Since the boys in the school have to wear nice trousers and button-down shirts with ties, everyone changes for gym. Fine, no problem with that. That's what locker rooms are for -- changing before and after class. Anyway, seems that there's this one guy, he's nearly nineteen (I gathered that at some point in elementary school he repeated a year) and he's a bit of a bully. He had been picking on T.J. all week because he was "the new kid" and not likely to make trouble. Well, today this bully took it one step too far; he actually shoved T.J. into the lockers! T.J. hit his face, got a bloody nose and a cut above his eye. As you might imagine, after three days of being picked on and harassed, T.J. had enough! He laid into this kid with a couple of punches! The fight had to be broken up by some of the other kids and the teacher. Of course the dean was brought in, both T.J. and the other kid were pulled out of class, statements were taken after the school nurse looked them over and the other kids who saw everything told what they saw.
Bottom line -- The Bully is being suspended and I was assured that if he steps out of line one more time, he will be expelled, despite the fact it's his senior year. Nothing is being done to T.J. although he did get a warning about fighting in the future.
Other than T.J.'s face looking like he went a few rounds in the ring with a boxer, he'll be fine. I'm actually kind of proud that he stood up for himself. Maybe he won't get picked on in the future.
